It was early afternoon at Moeraki Beach.

I could see thick layers of low-altitude clouds in the distance over the beach, but the ocean view was still clear when I pulled into the parking lot. The plan was to wait until golden hour for better lighting conditions for photography.

It was a few hundred metres walk from my car to the famous Moeraki Boulders, so I took my time and slowly walked towards them. About halfway there, mist started to form and roll in. Within a few minutes, the distant view changed from clear to a soft, creamy look.

That was when I saw a young girl walking along the wave line with her head down, as if she was searching for something. I recognised this as a simple, clean, yet impactful composition. It was only a choice between zooming in to emphasise the subject or keeping it wide to include more background for a sense of imagination. And I chose the latter.
