There is an endless supply of ice blocks at Fellsfjara—the Diamond Beach in Iceland—where ice chunks of different sizes from Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon wash ashore.

It’s practically an all-you-can-shoot scene, which can be a nightmare for photographers with decision anxiety.

When people think of photos of Diamond Beach, most imagine soft, warm sunlight shining through crystal-clear ice blocks. Those images are beautiful, but I had something different in mind that evening.

It was a cloudy evening, and the light was grey and flat. That worked in my favor, as I was aiming for a more monochrome look. Most visitors stayed near large groups of ice blocks where Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon meets the ocean. Those ice groups didn’t suit the mood I wanted, so I walked toward the west side of the beach to look for a more isolated subject.

After some time, I settled on this piece. It sat at the water’s edge, with a larger chunk of ice behind it. The black sand provided a strong foreground and complemented the overall tone well.
