After a four-hour drive from Sapporo and checking into the hotel at 2 a.m., I never expected to get up the next morning and take photos of Lake Kussharo.

My room had a window facing the lake, but it was dark when I arrived, so I had no idea what kind of view I would see.

For some reason, I woke up at 5 a.m. Faint light came through the window and hit my eyes. I looked outside and saw something unreal — a scene that is a textbook example of minimalist photography. I quickly grabbed my down jacket, put it on over the hotel pajamas, and rushed to the shore of Lake Kussharo with my camera and tripod to take this photo. I tried my best to edit this image to reflect what I saw that morning, but there is still a lot left to be desired.
